Event Description:

On Sunday, August 11, 2019 at 2 p.m., Homestead National Monument of America Artist-in-Residence Altman Studeny will present a public program, “The Idea of Things More Than the Things Themselves” at the Homestead Education Center.

During the program, Studeny will share his research into the adaptability of the prairie and lead visitors on a guided walk of the monument’s interpretive trails. At the event's conclusion, a collaborative performance of language, movement, and sound will share the group’s experience of listening to the land to better understand our place in it. No art experience necessary! This event is free and open to all ages.

Altman Studeny will be in residence at Homestead National Monument of America from July 31 through August 13. During his stay at the monument, Studeny will immerse himself in the cultural and natural resources at Homestead National Monument of America to deepen his understanding of the history the monument represents, and to inspire his painting and other forms of artistic expression. Visitors are welcome to come and visit with him during his residency.

Studeny has worked as a resident with the South Dakota Arts Council since 2008 and holds an MFA from Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, where his thesis work focused on the political role of art making in rural environments. Samples of his work can be found at www.altmanstudeny.com
